Non-English speaking voters are traditionally marginalized and left out of important discussions around local policy. There are over 90,000 Somali speakers in Minneapolis alone — and Great MN Schools (GMS) didn’t want to ignore their voices or perspectives as they sought to mobilize their community to advocate for increased access to high-quality schools throughout Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Great MN Schools (GMS) consistently outperforms district averages for students of color, low-income students, and English Language Learners. They knew they needed a way to reach and engage these student’s families. With a limited text outreach budget, GMS knew it was not practical to send both an English and Somali language text to every individual in their region — yet they also did not want to overlook this important voting block. By partnering with Murmuration, GMS used our data and tools to identify precincts with a high relative density of Somali speakers. GMS also leveraged Murmuration’s ability to develop custom data sets to help visualize and analyze the distribution of Somali speakers throughout Minneapolis. This information enabled GMS to refine their Somali language outreach strategy to specific target geographies, enabling them to more efficiently allocate their resources to drive voter turnout in their local school board race.

GMS has been able to refine their targeting and outreach efforts to better meet the needs of their community without going over budget — growing the number of Somali language speakers among their membership and building a more inclusive coalition in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
