Frequently Asked Questions About Workspaces in Organizer

Workspaces are here—a new feature offering focused spaces inside one Organizer account. Create dedicated spaces for each region, campaign, coalition, or team when it makes sense, so everyone works with just the data tied to their piece of the mission—without maintaining separate accounts.

Whether you're a longtime partner or just getting to know Organizer, this FAQ answers what partners ask most about Workspaces: what they are, who they're for, how they affect your data, and what they cost.

The Basics

Who Are Workspaces For?

Workspaces are for nonprofits and community organizations that want to organize their staff, volunteers, contractors—or organizing partners they coordinate with directly—within a single Organizer account.

Here are some common examples:

  • Regions: Give geographic teams their own focused space for efforts in their area.
  • Campaigns: Stand up a dedicated space for a specific campaign.
  • Coalitions: Use Workspaces to coordinate organizing partners.
  • Seasonal Initiatives: Create a space for a temporary effort, like a get-out-the-vote push.
  • Population-Specific Initiatives: Remain focused on the people your organization is trying to reach.
  • Reporting: Pull a clean, Workspace-level view when reporting results to funders and stakeholders.
  • Training: Give new staff and volunteers a low-stakes space to explore and try out Organizer.

Do I Have to Use Workspaces?

No. Workspaces are completely optional within Organizer. If your current setup within Organizer works well for you, nothing needs to change.

How Do I Get Started With Workspaces?

If you're a current partner, reach out to your Partner Success Manager. They can help you decide whether Workspaces fit your goals, set them up with you, and walk through any details specific to your setup.

If you're exploring Organizer for the first time and think Workspaces might be right for your organization, reach out and we'll help you find the right fit.

Your Data

Will Creating a Workspace Change or Affect My Existing Data In Organizer?

No. Creating a Workspace doesn't move, copy, or delete anything. A Workspace is simply a focused view of data you already have.

Are Workspaces Hard to Set Up or Learn?

Not at all. You can set one up in a few steps, and it fits right into the Organizer experience your team knows.

If Someone Edits Data Inside a Workspace, Will Everything Get Out of Sync?

No. Because Workspaces live within one shared account, an update made in a Workspace carries through everywhere that data lives.

What Data Gets Shared, and What Stays Private to a Workspace?

A Workspace shapes what you see, not what exists. It gives you a focused view of the group your Workspace is built around, while anything you create still rolls up to the account—so your organization always keeps one connected picture.

Here's a quick breakdown:

  • What you see in a Workspace is focused. Your view is limited to the Community your Workspace is built around. When you create other Communities, check Analytics, or run Exports, they're automatically filtered to your Workspace’s Community, so you're working with just what's relevant to your team. Profiles outside your Workspace aren't gone—they're simply not part of your view, but they're always viewable from the top-level account.
  • What you create rolls up to the top-level account. Outreach interactions, imports, and profile updates you make in a Workspace flow to the top-level account automatically. Update a phone number in your Workspace, and everyone who views that profile sees the change. Atlas data refreshes happen at the account level, so the latest data appears in every Workspace.
  • Admins see the full picture. From the top-level account, an Admin can see data across every Workspace—including which Workspace each import, outreach effort, and update came from.
  • Admins can share resources across Workspaces. When groups want to work from the same foundation, an Admin can share account-level assets across more than one Workspace. That lets teams stay consistent and avoid rebuilding the same components, while each Workspace stays focused on its own group.

Workspaces vs. Accounts

Should I Use a Workspace or a Separate Account?

The deciding factor is data control—specifically, whether you need true data separation. Workspaces organize who sees what within one shared account, while separate accounts keep data truly separate.

  • Organizing your own teams? A Workspace is usually the right fit. Keep every region and campaign under one account, and give each team a cleaner, more focused space.
  • Working with a separate, self-governing organization? A Workspace can still be the right fit if your organization is directly coordinating these outside partners. If you need true data separation, however, then a separate account is the right fit.

When Is a Workspace Not the Right Fit?

A Workspace isn't the answer when a group needs true data separation or independence. Specifically:

  • Legal data separation. Organizations with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities that need to keep their work legally separate need their own accounts. Workspaces don't provide legal data separation.
  • Strict data-sharing rules. Organizations with strict rules for sharing profiles and interactions between organizing partners are better served by separate accounts.
  • Separate billing. Workspaces can't be billed separately.
  • Splitting or merging data later. Because we don't offer migration between accounts, a Workspace can't later be pulled out into its own account.

Can I Move or Merge My Existing Separate Accounts Into Workspaces?

No. There's no way to merge existing Organizer accounts into Workspaces.

Can I Move or Merge Workspaces Into Separate Accounts?

No. A Workspace can't be pulled out into its own Organizer account.

For Coalitions

Can Several Organizations Share One Account Through Workspaces?

Yes, in many cases coalitions can set up Workspaces for their separate organizing partners within a single account. Your Partner Success Manager will review the request first to confirm a few things:

  • Whether the partner is new to Murmuration and needs to sign our Community Standards.
  • Whether a new organizing partner fee applies.
  • Whether your service level needs to change.

In some cases, separate accounts remain the best option—especially when true data separation is needed.

How Should We Decide Between Workspaces and Separate Accounts?

For a coalition, the cost of bringing on an organizing partner is the same whether that partner works in a Workspace or a separate account. The decision ultimately comes down to how you work together.

Workspaces tend to be a good fit for coalitions that:

  • Share strategy and resources with partners.
  • Want to keep their data synced across partners.
  • Work in overlapping geographies.

Separate accounts tend to be the better fit when partners need to control their own data, have strict data-sharing rules for both profiles and interactions, need legal separation, or will eventually need their own Organizer license.

Pricing

How Much Do Workspaces Cost?

Workspaces are included in your Organizer license, so there's no added fee to create them for your own team.

The one exception applies to coalitions that bring separate organizing partners into their account—whether you're already a coalition adding a new partner, or you're adding an organizing partner for the first time. In that case, a per-partner organizing fee may apply between $500 and $1000 per contract year, depending on your contract terms.

These fees are prorated to your contract year. A service-level change may also apply, depending on how your organizing partners are trained. Your Partner Success Manager can confirm exactly what applies to you.

Is a Workspace Cheaper Than a Separate Account?

For teams who simply need to organize teams within their organization, yes—Workspaces is more cost-effective than setting up separate Organizer accounts.

For a coalition adding an organizing partner, the per-partner cost is the same whether that partner works in a Workspace or in a separate account.

Community Standards

What Are Community Standards, and When Do I Need to Sign Them?

Murmuration's Community Standards are a shared set of commitments that help every partner use Organizer to build safe, trusted spaces for community-centered collective power.

Every separate organization that uses Organizer signs them—which is part of why each independent organization needs its own account. If your coalition brings on an organizing partner who's new to Murmuration, that partner signs the Community Standards before going live. This is true whether the partner is set up as a Workspace or as a separate account.
